Gabriel Shaffer

Gabriel Shaffer is an artist, muralist, curator and writer who lives and works in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The son of folk and visionary artist Cher Shaffer, he makes drawings, paintings and assemblages, often from salvaged materials, featuring totems, cityscapes, portraits and masks; his career began with a sold-out premiere at the 2005 Outsider Art Fair in New York. After about a decade as a full-time artist in Asheville, North Carolina, he moved to New Orleans around 2015 to curate for Red Truck Gallery (2015-2019), then founded Mortal Machine Gallery, which took over Red Truck's former 940 Royal Street space in 2021. He has curated more than 100 exhibitions, directed booths at SCOPE Miami Beach and the LA Art Show, written for Juxtapoz, and made murals and commissions for Facebook, BMW, the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Asheville Museum of Art.
